World Wetlands Day - Ramsar Convention, is celebrated on February 2. to highlight the importance of wetlands and as a reminder to the need for their conservation.

Marking this day dates back to 1971. when over 160 countries in the Iranian city of Ramsar signed the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, especially as habitat for marsh birds. Our country is one of the signatories of the Convention and in our country currently there is ten protected Ramsar sites, with a total area of ​​over 60,000 ha. These are: "Gornje Podunavlje", "Koviljsko-petrovaradinski rit", "Labudovo okno", "Ludaško jezero", "Obedska bara", "Peštarsko polje", "Slano Kopovo", "Stari Begej-Carska bara", "Vlasina", "Zasavica".

On the occasion, this happening was held on 31.01.2014. in the Regional Institute for Protection of Nature and the attendies were addressed by Jovana Jarić, special adviser to the Minister of Energy, Development and the Environmental protection, Dr. Srdjan Belij - State Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Mining and Spatial Planning, Dr. Slobodan Puzović - Provincial Secretary for Planning, construction and Environmental protection, Goran Sekulić, assistant director of the Institute for nature Protection of Nature of Serbia and Dr. Biljana Panjković, director of the Regional Institute for the Protection of Nature.

          

 

The main theme which this year celebrates this day is "Wetlands & Agriculture: Partners for Growth", proposed by the Ramsar Bureau. Four presentations were held:

  • Ramsarska konvencija u Republici Srbiji, Jelena Dučić (Ministarstvo energetike, razvoja i zaštite životne sredine);
  • Karpatska inicijativa vlažnih staništa, Aleksandra Došlić (Ministarstvo prirodnih resursa, rudarstva i prostornog planiranja);
  • Međunarodni cenzus ptica vodenih staništa (IWC) i njegovo korišćenje u upravlјanju vodama u Srbiji, Milan Ružić (Društvo za zaštitu i proučavanje ptica Srbije);  
  • Polјoprivreda u Ramsarskim područjima Vlasina i Peštersko polјe, Miloš Vukelić (Zavod za zaštitu prirode Srbije);

and screening of the documentary "Brand for environmentally friendly trend," by the Tourist Organization of Sjenica.

For the end, after working part of the meeting, an exhibition of photographs by Laszlo Juhasz titled "Metamorphosis" was presented and Cultural Society "Gajret" with minstrel Vuk Pantović from Sjenica preformed.
